SATURDAY PUZZLE — Today’s grid is by a pair of young veterans, Erik Agard and Paolo Pasco, who made a fun little Monday puzzle together in 2017. I actually remembered that one when I picked this puzzle up and gave it a good first pass, without getting much more than ELBA, KATIE and MMA. This grid is an interesting and misleading configuration — chunky, with a lot of smaller words and no scary stacks to struggle with, but still quite hard to make a dent in.
As expected from a puzzle by these constructors, this grid was stuffed with subtle misdirection and quips. I’m sure I didn’t notice all of the skillful convergences, but I really liked CROAKS over UVULAE, a tough and funny nut clued as, “They’re down in the mouth.”
I assumed that there would be some unfamiliar new entries, often the norm, but pretty much knew the lingo today. Even the obligatory film reference was an oldie. HALLOWEEN II came out in 1981 — were either of these guys born then?
Some of the smallest pieces were no help — I had “meh” for NAH, “Alba” for BIEL and “tan” for MOW, and I drew a blank on ISU and PTA, although that second entry couldn’t have been anything else, right? Like I said, nothing too newfangled.
17A: There were a few funky throwback entries today, which could have been winks to us olds, or just really good words like this one, last used in 1983: POTBELLIED STOVE. I guess it’s a tubby little thing.
19A: I felt a smidgen curmudgeonly about the name here, ADIA, because it was unfamiliar to me, and because it seemed like a gimmicky twin to the venerable AIDA at 48A. But first of all, the name means “gift” in Swahili, so I might just be too provincial to know it; second of all, Sarah McLachlan almost won a Grammy for a song by this name, and references to that have been used to clue this entry a ton of times.
34A: All three entries in the center zigzag here were debuts. “Becoming” might ring a bell as a recent blockbuster book (I hope it rings a bell, because it was the best-selling book of 2018); the “someone” who wrote it, MICHELLE OBAMA, also had a birthday this week.
35A: The meeting of two great puns here, where this cue meets 12D, is inordinately pleasing to me. A “Mine field?” is referring to that sacred area around each of us that is shared only grudgingly in most cases — one’s PERSONAL SPACE. Running down into that final E, a “Stretch for relaxation" is ALONE TIME, those reflective moments that you take after being stuck on a crowded subway car for an hour, silently screaming, “Serenity now!”
54A: This clue demanded historical knowledge I didn’t have, although it’s no surprise that the original name for a mountain would be a coinage by its original inhabitants. There’s a movement to restore the name TACOMA to Mt. Rainier, in fact, the way Mt. McKinley was rechristened Denali.
13D: “Sedative” and “euphoriant?” I had no idea what this could be, and KAVA KAVA was just a supplement, as far as I knew. Did you know that there are multiple establishments in my own city, and maybe yours, that provide various refreshments made from this stuff?
23D: I’m guessing these guys mean a “speed round” in a bar, where you’d DO SHOTS. I realize there’s a possibility that I, a slow sipper, could be missing something here.
26D: The only “Chinese e-commerce giant” we know about, I think, is ALIBABA; there are probably more, but this is a huge company, famous for the largest I.P.O. in history.
ERIK: None of my favorite clues from this puzzle are mine: 34-Across (a clue which could have never existed if this puzzle was published at the time we wrote it — trust the process!) and 23-Down came from the NYT team, while 31-Down is a classic Paolo fanute. Thanks to all involved for the collaboration!
PAOLO: Speaking as the person who saw Erik write the clues for 17- and 35-Across, I can tell you Erik is being modest, as per usual. It was a pleasure to collaborate again with this “Jeopardy!” champ, crossword wunderkind and major force behind the Crossword Puzzle Collaboration Directory (which you should totally hit up if you’re an aspiring puzzle maker who’s underrepresented in any way). Echoing my thanks to the NYT team, and I hope you enjoyed the solve!
If you were feeling sort of smug about knowing nearly every word in an Erik Agard puzzle, get ready for him to fanute on all of us next time. Fortunately, The Times Magazine had a story about this very thing a few years ago that fanutely (greatly) fanuted (elucidated) the fanute (situation).
